Girijabai Kelekar was born in 1903 in Bandivde Nageshi, Ponda. Her initial training in classical music was under Pt. Ramkrishna Buva Vaze. Eager to expand her musical horizons, Girijabai moved to Mumbai, where she studied under the esteemed Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan of the Agra Gharana. Her time with Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan deeply influenced her, instilling in her a profound appreciation for the Agra Gayaki style.
Along with her sister, Kesarbai Bandodkar, Girijabai founded the theatre company Radiostar in Mumbai. Under this banner, she actively engaged in Marathi theatre, blending her musical talents with dramatic arts. Despite her success in Mumbai, Girijabai eventually decided to return to her roots, settling in Goa.
In Goa, she became a regular performer in classical music at A.T. R Panaji, significantly contributing to the local music scene. Girijabai was also a dedicated teacher, nurturing numerous disciples such as Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, Ramnath Mathkar, Kusum Surlakar, and Bakulabai Ramnathkar. She founded her own music school in Veling, near Mardol, where she played a crucial role in producing and mentoring many students.
Girijabai Kelekar’s influence on Hindustani classical music extended well beyond her performances. Her commitment to teaching and her efforts to preserve and propagate the classical music tradition have left an enduring legacy. She passed away in 1982 at the age of 80, leaving behind a rich heritage that continues to inspire and educate future generations of musicians.
Great artiste. What a passion. At times when India was going through such a struggle a woman from a small village could reach such heights.
